Connect an AI agent

Connect an AI app to read campaigns and occasions, make drafts and review results. You decide whether it may publish or pause.

What an agent can do

Connect your AI app to WConvert and ask it to prepare a campaign, organize an occasion or explain your results. The connection uses MCP (Model Context Protocol), which lets the app use WConvert’s tools on your site. An agent can:

  • List campaigns and occasions, and say how they are doing.
  • Make draft campaigns from a design or a starter, with your words.
  • Change a draft’s words, pages, dates and frequency.
  • Add an occasion or copy one to next year.

It cannot publish or pause anything until you allow it. WConvert’s agent tools never return leads or anyone’s contact details. Results are counts. Delete is never offered.

Before you start

  • WConvert Free or Pro. The connection is available in both editions. Pro designs and features still need Pro.
  • WordPress 6.9 or later. WordPress holds the “Abilities” an agent may use; WConvert adds its own to that list.
  • An active MCP Adapter. If your site runs WooCommerce with its MCP feature turned on, WooCommerce already includes the Adapter. There is nothing extra to install. Otherwise, download mcp-adapter.zip from the MCP Adapter releases. In WordPress, open Plugins → Add New Plugin → Upload Plugin, upload the ZIP, choose Install Now, then Activate Plugin. The Adapter is pre-1.0, so expect changes. It needs WordPress 6.9 and will not activate on 6.8.

Once the Adapter is active, WConvert adds its server at https://YOUR-SITE/wp-json/wconvert/mcp. Replace YOUR-SITE with your site’s address, including any subdirectory where WordPress is installed.

Choose your AI app

Your app needs to connect to an HTTP MCP server and send an authentication header. Choose your app below, then create its WordPress user and application password in steps 1 and 2.

Ways to connect your AI app to WConvert
AI appConnection
Claude CodeAdd the server with a terminal command.
Claude DesktopUse mcp-remote with Node.js on your computer.
CursorAdd the URL and header to your personal MCP configuration.
ChatGPT desktop / CodexUse the shared local MCP configuration.
ChatGPT on the webThis application-password connection is not supported. See why in the FAQ.

Other MCP apps can use the same server URL if they support an Authorization header with HTTP Basic authentication. An app that only offers OAuth sign-in cannot use this setup directly.

1. Give the agent its own user

Open Users → Add New and create a user just for the agent, for example ai-agent, with the Administrator role. WConvert’s abilities need administrator permissions. A separate user lets you identify what the agent did and cut off its access independently of your own account.

2. Create an application password

  1. Open the agent user’s profile and find Application Passwords.
  2. Enter your app’s name, such as Claude or Cursor, and choose Add New Application Password.
  3. Copy the password that appears. WordPress will not show it again.

Your site needs HTTPS for application passwords. Local test sites are the exception.

3. Add your site to the AI app

Follow the instructions for one app. You do not need to configure every app listed here.

Claude Code

In a macOS or Linux terminal, run the command below. Replace YOUR-SITE, ai-agent if you chose another username, and APP PASSWORD with your application password. Keep the quotes and the colon between username and password.

Connect Claude Code to WConvert bash
claude mcp add --transport http wconvert https://YOUR-SITE/wp-json/wconvert/mcp \
  --header "Authorization: Basic $(printf 'ai-agent:APP PASSWORD' | base64)"

This sends Authorization: Basic followed by the base64-encoded username and application password. Open Claude Code in the same project and use /mcp to check the connection. See Claude Code’s MCP documentation for its connection controls.

Other app configurations

These configurations use BASE64_VALUE: your username and application password, joined with a colon and encoded as base64. Generate it locally in a macOS or Linux terminal:

Encode the application password bash
printf 'ai-agent:APP PASSWORD' | base64

Replace ai-agent and APP PASSWORD before running it. Copy the output as one line, then replace BASE64_VALUE and YOUR-SITE in your app’s example below. Keep the word Basic and the space after it. The encoded value is still a password: keep your configuration private and out of shared project files.

Claude Desktop

Claude Desktop should work through mcp-remote, which connects its local MCP configuration to your site. It needs Node.js and npx on your computer.

Add the following server to claude_desktop_config.json, keeping any existing servers. Replace YOUR-SITE and BASE64_VALUE, then fully restart Desktop. Keep WCONVERT_AUTH as written; only replace its value’s placeholder.

Claude Desktop MCP configuration json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "wconvert": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": [
        "-y",
        "mcp-remote",
        "https://YOUR-SITE/wp-json/wconvert/mcp",
        "--header",
        "Authorization:${WCONVERT_AUTH}"
      ],
      "env": {
        "WCONVERT_AUTH": "Basic BASE64_VALUE"
      }
    }
  }
}
Cursor

Add this server to ~/.cursor/mcp.json in your home directory. If you already have servers in mcpServers, add the wconvert entry alongside them. Then check that WConvert is enabled in Cursor’s MCP settings and available to its agent.

Cursor MCP configuration json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "wconvert": {
      "url": "https://YOUR-SITE/wp-json/wconvert/mcp",
      "headers": {
        "Authorization": "Basic BASE64_VALUE"
      }
    }
  }
}

See Cursor’s MCP documentation for configuration options.

ChatGPT desktop and Codex

ChatGPT desktop’s local MCP connections, Codex CLI and the Codex IDE extension share the configuration on your computer. Add this entry to your personal ~/.codex/config.toml, preserving your existing settings.

ChatGPT desktop and Codex MCP configuration toml
[mcp_servers.wconvert]
url = "https://YOUR-SITE/wp-json/wconvert/mcp"
http_headers = { Authorization = "Basic BASE64_VALUE" }

In ChatGPT desktop, open Settings → MCP servers and restart the server after saving. In Codex CLI, start a new session. Use /mcp to check the connection. See OpenAI’s local MCP configuration guide.

4. Try it with a draft

Leave publishing off while you try the connection. Start by asking the app to list your campaigns, then ask it to prepare a draft:

  • “List my WConvert campaigns.”
  • “Set up Black Friday from 20 November to 1 December with a top bar and a popup, as drafts.”
  • “How is Black Friday doing?”

Check WConvert → Campaigns: the new campaigns should be drafts. Review their words, pages, dates, timezone and frequency, then open their previews. Include the year when planning an occasion so the dates are clear. A draft does not appear to visitors or collect signups. An occasion that has not run yet may have no results to report.

Ask “Review these drafts and tell me what needs fixing before I publish.” When you are happy with them, follow Preview, publish and test a campaignto check the real page and any signup or delivery behavior.

5. Decide whether it may publish

Open WConvert → Settings → Connections & destinations → AI agents. The Let AI agents publish switch is off by default. After changing it, choose Save AI agent setting.

  • Off: the agent makes drafts; a person reviews and publishes them.
  • On: the agent can also publish and pause. Publishing goes through the same checks as the editor’s Publish button.

The agent can check readiness before publishing, and WConvert refuses publishing or pausing when the switch is off. The review tells the agent whether publishing is allowed and what needs fixing. Editing a live campaign changes its draft; the live version stays unchanged until it is published again.

To stop an agent: revoke its application password in the user’s profile, or delete the user. Turning off publishing alone still lets it read and work on drafts.

Frequently asked questions

Can I connect from ChatGPT?

For ChatGPT desktop with local MCP, use the configuration above. The web connection is different: it does not accept the application-password header used in this guide. Its authenticated connections use OAuth sign-in, which this WConvert setup does not provide. Pasting the server URL into ChatGPT is not enough to connect it. Use one of the apps above for this setup. See OpenAI’s custom MCP connection guidefor ChatGPT’s authentication options.

Do I need Pro or a separate MCP Adapter plugin?

The AI connection works with WConvert Free. You only need Pro when the campaign uses a Pro design or feature. If WooCommerce’s MCP feature is on, its bundled Adapter is enough; otherwise install the standalone MCP Adapter. Both paths need WordPress 6.9 or later.

Why can’t my app connect?

Check that the server URL points to your WordPress installation, WordPress is 6.9 or later, and the MCP Adapter is running. Use the agent user’s application password, not its normal WordPress login password. The user needs the Administrator role.

For a sign-in error, check the username, password and the space after Basic. If you revoked the password, create a new one and replace the saved header. If your app offers only OAuth sign-in, choose an app that accepts the header shown here.

Why is Application Passwords missing from the user’s profile?

Check that the site uses HTTPS; WordPress makes an exception for local test sites. A security plugin or hosting policy may also disable application passwords. Ask your site administrator to check that policy before continuing.

Can the agent read leads or change a live campaign?

WConvert’s agent tools return campaign information and result counts, never leads or contact details. Editing a live campaign updates its draft. Publishing that change, or pausing the campaign, requires Let AI agents publish. There is no delete tool. These limits apply to WConvert’s tools, not every action the WordPress user can take.

How do I disconnect an agent?

Open its WordPress user profile and revoke that app’s application password, or delete the dedicated user. This stops access even if the AI app still has the connection saved. Turning off Let AI agents publish only removes publishing and pausing permission; it leaves reading and draft work available.

For scripts, n8n and Zapier

The same abilities are available through WordPress’s REST API on WordPress 6.9 or later, without the MCP Adapter. For a workflow you configure, use HTTP Basic authentication with the same agent username and application password. Call the ability routes below; the publishing switch applies to them too.

WordPress ability requests http
GET /wp-json/wp-abilities/v1/abilities?category=wconvert

GET /wp-json/wp-abilities/v1/abilities/wconvert/find-campaigns/run?input[occasion_id]=black-friday-2026

POST /wp-json/wp-abilities/v1/abilities/wconvert/create-campaign/run
Content-Type: application/json

{"input": {"name": "Black Friday bar", "goal": "promote_offer", "design_id": "DESIGN_ID", "link": "/black-friday/"}}

DELETE /wp-json/wp-abilities/v1/abilities/wconvert/publish/run?input[campaign_id]=CAMPAIGN_ID

DELETE /wp-json/wp-abilities/v1/abilities/wconvert/pause/run?input[campaign_id]=CAMPAIGN_ID

Prefix each path with your site’s HTTPS address. Replace DESIGN_ID with an available design from wconvert/find-designs, and CAMPAIGN_ID with the campaign to act on. The occasion filter uses the example ID black-friday-2026; use your own occasion’s ID. The draft example uses a JSON input object.

WordPress uses GET for reads, POST for draft writes, and DELETE for abilities marked as changing what visitors see. That is why both publish and pause use DELETE; neither deletes the campaign. Each ability’s description, returned by the list call, explains its inputs with an example.
